Washington Tax Law Firm Concentrates on Washington Tax Law

Washington is one of only nine states without a personal income tax, there is a high reliance the state’s 6.5 percent sales tax, and when businesses fail to pay what they owe, the state’s Department of Revenue takes an aggressive approach to collect delinquencies.

Paying Tax in Washington

After a business owner registers their business with the State of Washington, the Department of Revenue (DOR) assigns the business a UBI/tax registration number and a filing frequency – either monthly, quarterly, or annually, based upon an estimate of yearly business income:

  • Monthly – more than $4,800 income per year
  • Quarterly – estimated annual tax liabilities of $1,050 to $4,800
  • Annual – estimated annual tax liabilities below $1050

Currently, only monthly and quarterly taxpayers are required to file and pay their taxes electronically.

What If I Can’t Pay?

If you’ve collected Washington State taxes but cannot pay them, your account with the Washington State Department of Revenue will become delinquent when the due date passes and the balance remains. Once this happens, penalties and interest will begin to accrue on the unpaid tax until the entire tax debt is paid, so the longer you ignore your obligations, the bigger and more expensive the problem will become.
